Combining proper exercise with a healthy diet
is the key to a healthy lifestyle.
Aerobic exercise burns fat. Aerobic exercise
involves increased breathing and elevated heart rate over an
extended period of time. After about 20 minutes of aerobic exercise,
the body needs to use its stored fat reserves as fuel.
Anaerobic exercise involves short bursts
of exertion followed by periods of rest. Examples of anaerobic
exercise include push ups, stomach crunches, pull ups, and lifting
weights. Although anaerobic exercise does not burn fat, its
muscle-building results complement aerobic exercise.
Nutrition is another important aspect
of weight loss. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Guide
Pyramid of daily dietary recommendations divides food into six
groups.
At the top of the pyramid are foods you should
eat only sparingly. As the pyramid gets wider toward the bottom,
the suggested number of servings increases. As you go up, it
DOES NOT mean the foods are more important or somehow better.
Being higher on the pyramid simply means you should eat less
of that type of food each day.
Check the USDA
Web site for more information about appropriate servings
from each of the six food groups.
