Banded Gastroplasty
Surgery is an option for patients 100 pounds overweight, or whose body mass index (BMI) is 40 or above, due to the greatly increased risk of health problems associated with severe obesity. Surgery is a drastic medical method of weight loss that should not be taken lightly.
The Vertical Banded Gastroplasty restricts food intake. The Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG and Lap VBG) limits food intake by creating a small pouch (1/2 ounce) in the upper stomach with a narrow outlet (1/2 inch) reinforced by a mesh band to prevent stretching. The pouch fills quickly and empties slowly with solid food, producing a feeling of fullness.
The disadvantage of this medical weight loss surgery is it usually results in less weight loss than other surgeries. It does not restrict intake of high calorie liquids (sweets) and the pouch can stretch with overeating. As a result 20% of people do not lose weight and only half of people lose at least 50% of their excess weight with a VBG.
The approximate surgery fee for this procedure is usually around $17,000.
